During the first half of the 20th century, wheel cut and patterned glass bowl shades were very popular choices for dining room lighting. Demand for bowl shade fixtures coincided with the invention of the Tungsten filament in 1915. Lighting designers soon changed their focus from downcast task lighting to experiments with indirect lighting.
