Beautiful Oak Card Cabinet by Michigan Chair Co c1915 Item # F0497
It's the sort of cabinet we pine for – although it's made of oak. Pictured here is a rare bird: a standing card catalog cabinet that offers functionality as well as stunning utilitarian charm. Straight from an early-century doctor's or lawyer's office, this cabinet features 3 sections of 13 drawers (that's 39 total), composed in card catalog and letter-storage formation. The smaller drawers would have been used to house small cards or long slips and they draw out and feature a break that allows the whole stack of slips to be removed. Note that the sides of the smaller drawers are made of cardboard, while the fronts are solid oak (see 4th photo for details – the cardboard has been treated with a "wood grain" paper). The larger drawers are meant to hold 8 1/2" x 11" sheets of paper laying down in a Shannon-style filing method. It's not hard to imagine what you'll do with this piece, but now that we've seen it, it's hard to imagine our lives without it.
Designed and built by the Michigan Chair Company of Grand Rapids, MI, which operated off and on from 1890 to 1972. Note the GRM badge shown in the final image.
