Description

We took special care in restoring this incredible early-century Clothing sign. Having never before seen anything like it, we are fascinated by the ornate blue and white enamel frame and the 18" tall pressed enamel letters, each of which is adorned by a set of light bulbs so that this sign glows from afar. Measuring over eight feet long, this monumental sign is more than a statement piece, it's a fully functional work of art and a standout piece of retail signage history.

Made by the Federal Electric Sign Company of Chicago, Ill., these unique electrically illuminated signs were first patented in 1903 by inventor and company proprietor J. H. Goehst. The formula for producing these illuminated signs was brilliant: each letter was pre-made and could be applied to any word as needed so any sign or any size was possible. The letters and original sockets are stamped with "F.E. Co. Chicago." A handful of the sockets have been replaced and the sign is rewired with an eight foot cloth-covered cord. Comes with 58 11-watt incandescent light bulbs.
