Hand Carved Curtain Panel from Funeral Hearse c1920s Item # F9019
31" W x 40" H
Likely salvaged from a 1920's Ford hearse, this hand-carved panel represents a unique trend in automotive history. Originally, horse-drawn funeral carriages were adorned with silk or velvet hangings, but, over time, the curtains were replaced with carved or painted panels, which were still and more permanent, speaking to the eternal nature of death. The carriages gave way to automobiles, but the trend of carved panels remains. Judging from the styling and size, this edition likely came from a late 1920's Ford hearse.
The piece has a wonderful "dry" finish, with the original paint flaking off in just the right amount. The piece is stabilized by two boards along the back and can be hung via wire we have fashioned to the back.
- Historical Style: Industrial
- Condition notes: Worn and weathered, but all commensurate with age.
