3-Light Gill "Modernique" Fixture w/Clear Glass, c1929 Item # R0633
Gill Glass & Fixture Company's Modernique line was one of the earlier slipper-shade (or "shaded light") fixture designs introduced, in their catalog No. 17 in 1930. At the time, what we now call Art Deco was called Modernistic, so the name was a well-branded twist on the term. This example is very unusual in having clear glass shades - Gill was best known for their highly decorated glass treatments. This is American Art Deco as it first bursts onto the lighting scene on the cusp of the Great Depression. Many of Gill's Deco fixtures, including the Modernique line, were designed by Harry Aglow of Philadelphia. The technical and design patents for the Modernique series are 1780161 and D790001 respectively.
