Rare Civil War-Era Gilt 2-Arm Gasolier, c1865 Item # R0965
Being on the west coast, we simply don't see very many early gas fixtures pass through our shop. This one, attributed to Archer & Pancoast, is one of the earliest we've offered (see its coordinating partner in a separate listing), and we've gone to great pains to do it justice.
When disassembling the fixture, we found one area of original finish that had never been exposed to the elements, and our new bronze gilt treatment virtually duplicates what was first there. In addition, traces of the original gilding on the brass details also remained, and - given that we didn't want to poison our shop staff with the mercury used to create that first gilt finish - we have actually used gold leaf to approximate the look.
The 2-5/8" shadeholders, while not original to the fixture, are period originals, and we have given it a new, simple canopy. The shades themselves are spectacular, and feature a completely clear lower half and an etched upper hemisphere with wheel-cut stars and leaves - just the sort of lovely and restrained glass that would have complemented the gently flickering glass burner flame. The shades bear a subtle mark "# 1002" which may be the original model number.
