Pair of Moderne Paulding Kaolite 1795 Sconces, c1950 Item # R1170
While Sears and Montgomery Ward helped popularize porcelain light fixtures through their mail-order business, there were three major trademarked brands from manufacturers who sold lines mainly through lighting dealers on the "trade" side of the market – Pass & Seymour's Alabax, Efcolite's Durock, and Paulding's Kaolites. These two 1795 Paulding Kaolite brackets with coordinating body and shade have a late-Moderne style that reflects their 1950s time period.
Porcelain light fixtures first rose in prominence during the late 1920s. Their "sanitary" character, easy styling, range of colors, low costs, and material availability made them very popular during the Depression and World War II years, and they remained a mass-market staple well into the 1950s. Most were intended for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, and they frequently featured exposed bulbs and painted flowers or metallic pin striping.
