Pair of Mottled or Oxidized Copper Push Plates, c1910 Item # R1815
On this pair of finely beveled, plated-steel push plates we find an outstanding example of the warmth and drama of a finish that was common between 1900 and 1920, yet remains poorly understood today - mottled or oxidized copper. Consisting of bold patterns of relieved copper highlight on a darkly antiqued background, the finish was especially popular on less expensive materials like cast iron and steel to enrich and romanticize their look. It was used on lighting, hardware, and even furniture to convey a rugged and exotic character that was unique to the time period.
- Note: There is some finish discoloration on these plates as can be seen in the photo, including one spot on the right as if it had tape on it at some point. We have left the finish as-is and chalk it up to "character."
