Pristine NOS Corbin "Portland" Beveled Door Set, c1910 Item # R1823
The plain yet substantial looking beveled door hardware style embodied in this mint "new old stock" set from Corbin was used in countless bungalows, foursquares and Colonial home variations from the turn of the century well into the 1930s, regardless of the architectural style of the house. A true old-house classic. It doesn't hurt our passion for this doorset to note that it was originally sold under the pattern name "Portland."
Equally interesting with this set is the amazing condition of its original finish - a finish known as mottled or oxidized copper that was common between 1900 and 1920, yet remains poorly understood today. Consisting of bold patterns of relieved copper highlight on a darkly antiqued background, the finish was especially popular on less expensive materials like cast iron and steel to enrich and romanticize their look. It was used on lighting, hardware, and even furniture to convey a rugged and exotic character that was unique to the time period.
