Lightolier Marquis Series 5-Arm Chandelier, c1926 Item # R1978
Frankly, we'd never seen a chandelier quite like this one. The unusual mix of bent tubular pipe and flat metal straps - popular themes of the 1920s - combined with a certain clean and forward-looking spirit in the proportions and details (like the sleek bullet finial) seemed to indicate a new and sophisticated take on traditional. But from when?
A little research surprisingly confirmed our exact observations… here is how the family was described in Lightolier's 1926 catalog from our archive: "The Marquis Series for the modern home of the latest type construction strikes a new note in design and finish. It is an unusual combination of strap work and reeded tube arms, and is proper for use with practically every style of architecture."
But this discovery also threw us a curve ball - we saw in the catalog pictures that this fixture, when we received it, was lacking the decorative collars on the bulb sockets described in the catalog.
Remarkably, it just so happened that we had recently acquired a set of the very glass collars described in the catalog on eBay for no better reason than that they were beautiful - who knew that we'd be able to reunite them with a fixture that they could originally have been used on!
Note: These rare vaseline "stretch" glass collars rest on the bulbs and are not attached to the fixture.
- Notes: Glass bobeches rest on the bulb and are not attached to the fixture
- Historical Style: Colonial Revival
