Stately Egg-and-Dart Flush-Mount Fixture, c1910 Item # R2010
Classical motifs found in the architecture of ancient Greece have always been popular in American design, too. (Not surprising, since calling upon the symbols used by the people trying out democracy the first time around is a powerful way to remind people of the nobility of the cause.) The first Classical Revival wave occurred alongside American Independence. The second came with Reconstruction, as the Federal government sought to ground its authority in symbols of the past. By 1910, when the lovely example you see here was made, Classical Revival was fully ensconced in the nation's finest houses. Ours features its original finish, though we've waxed it to restore its sheen. The shade has a few slight imperfections that make it appear as though there's paint on the glass, but not to worry, there's not.
- Historical Style: Classical Revival
