Bold, Colorful Dining Room Gas Art Glass Dome, c1920 Item # R2027

This very distinctive fixture with it's large and unusual shade is instantly recognizable as a popular acetylene gas dining room light from the fading years of the fuel's popularity in the 1920s. A 1925 American Lava Company (acetylene gas burners had ceramic tips made of a material known as "lava") describes this very shade as an "Art Dome - Crystal glass with decoration of Daisy Motif-flowers, yellow, tan and blue on Brown Parchment background."

Because acetylene gas was easily generated at home using water and carbide bricks or pellets, it remained a viable and popular fuel source for homes that didn't have access to electricity (especially on farms and in rural areas) right through the Depression. This fixture retains the original pair of burner arms under the dome, now converted to electric sockets.

  • Historical Style: Colonial Revival
