Antique Brass Flush Fixture w/Opalux Shade, c1909

Item #R2037

Description

Sweet and simple, this small flush-mount has been given a rich antique brass finish and holds a beautiful Opalux-marked Sheffield shade of gently ribbed and scalloped semi-opaque opalescent glass. Common for bedrooms during a time when light expectations were much lower than today, this light was and still could be perfect for a pantry, hallway, closet or even a porch.

Opalux was a lovely patented translucent opalescent glass marketed by Pettingell-Andrews of Boston at the same time the tungsten filament bulbs were being introduced before 1910. It had a special composition and reflecting surface that enhanced diffusion and produced a distinctive fiery warmth to the light coming through it. You can read more about it in the 1909 article shown in the second image.
