Sears Hi-Glo Art Deco Chandelier, c1934 Item # R2058
It's great fun, we think, to imagine the fresh little family, dapper bachelor, or liberated career gal (with bobbed hair, natch) who picked up this little dandy from Sears in 1934. Would they, he, or she have realized they were part of the trend that would only later be named Art Deco?
Deco was born during the heady days of the Paris Decorative Arts Exhibition of 1926, which expressly forbade any design that whiffed of historical influence. Here we see what happens when those strict constraints were loosened to make Deco more appealing to the everyday homeowner. Adding a flower here and a hand-hammered band there might not get this piece into a Deco coffee table book, but it will enliven any home with something enduring – and endearing – from a pivotal period in American design history.
- Notes: There are some small surface chips in the center shade, although they are stable and not visible when installed
- Historical Style: Art Deco
