Porcelain and Brass Pendant with Franklin Prismatic Reflector, c1915 Item # R2268
Much of the best industrial lighting draws its appeal from a few choice details. This antique original proves the point: the brass-capped porcelain socket, twisted cloth cord, and brass clamp-on shade holder elevate an otherwise ho-hum piece to a holy-cow masterwork.
Even better, the pendant wears a bulb-framing prismatic reflector shade. This darling little shade was made by Gillinder Franklin Glass of Philadelphia, which patented a similar design in 1905. While prismatic reflectors were engineered and marketed as highly "scientific" devices to amplify the dim light of early bulbs, they also happen to look utterly lovely.
