Rare Gas/Electric Wall Bracket with Prismatic Shade, c1910

Item #R2272

Description

This is a rare historical example from the time when gas lamps were duking it out with electric fixtures for primacy. Lighting manufacturers alit on the bright idea of offering combination fixtures – gas facing up, electric facing down – so homeowners could straddle the line. You can see the key for adjusting the gas just below the top socket, which has been retrofitted as a candelabra.

What makes this light extra extra special is the excellent condition of its original finish, how far it projects from the wall (suggesting it had the job of reaching over a desk or table), and its pretty prismatic shade. Prismatic shades were scientifically designed to reflect the most light, thus amplifying the dim glow of early bulbs.
