When we're in a whimsical frame of mind, we'll tell you this shade looks like the skirt of a dancer, swishing back and forth as she twirls about.

When we're in a practical frame of mind, we'll tell you this shade was scientifically designed to maximize the dim glow of early bulbs. The glass prisms refract and thus amplify light. (Some early manufacturers claimed that shades like this doubled the candlepower of a lamp.)

This style of shade, known as a "prism hood," was designed to hang directly on the neck of the light bulb, doing away with "unsightly" shade holders altogether. Because of this feature, not all modern light bulbs will fit properly through this shade.

Shown on our Burnside fixture and with the bulb that will work best, both sold separately.
