Smocked Prism Hood Shade R2276, c1900 Item # R2276
Pretty, isn't it? The scalloped edge, smocked top, wavy skirt – if light fixtures wore ball gowns, this is what they'd look like.
Fascinatingly, a shade this aesthetically enjoyable is actually the result of rigorous science. The glass prisms were carefully designed at the exact angle that would reflect the most light, thus amplifying the dim glow of early bulbs. Indeed, some early manufacturers claimed that shades like this could actually double the candlepower of a lamp.
And speaking of bulbs…shades like this were designed to hang directly on the neck of the light bulb, doing away with "unsightly" shade holders. As a result, not all modern bulbs will fit through this shade.
Shown on our Burnside fixture and with the bulb that will work best, both sold separately.
- Note: Shown on our Burnside fixture (A2340) and with our 40W A15 Clear Bulb, 2pk. (C5435), both sold separately
- Historical Style: Period Basic
