Classic Flush Mount Fixture With Faceted Lens Shade c1935 Item # R2366
Even more than the distinctive Deco-era commercial shade that is fitted to it, it is the chrome plating on this base reflects the very latest trends of the early Depression. Developed in the automobile industry, "chromium" was the new metal finish that quickly supplanted nickel and appealed to more modern tastes. The clear pressed-glass lens on the bottom of the shade directed more intense illumination downward while the opal upper glass diffused the light evenly around the space. Fixtures like this were promoted "For Stores, Public Buildings, Banks, Etc." and were especially popular in commercial settings. One c1934 catalog describes this fixture thusly: "Moderne Art - Its Greatest Appeal Is In Lighting Equipment. Decorative lighting is an attraction, and many of the leading merchants in large cities have responded to the new modern method of Lighting in view of the added attraction it adds."
- Historical Style: Art Deco
- Notes: Plating on ring that connects the 2 shades together is worn, but not distracting when installed.
