Gothic Revival Poker Light, c1925 Item # R2425

We'd wager it's not often that you hear "gothic" and "poker" in the same phrase, but you might be surprised at the connections between the two. Gothic Revival architecture originated in England in the 1740s. Gaining in popularity, it made the leap across the pond in the early 1800s; Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green, built in New Haven, Connecticut from 1814 to 1816, was the first Gothic-style church in America. Around the same time, the game of poker was invented (or evolved from other games, depending on whom you ask) as riverboats took to the Mississippi in 1811. Could it be a coincidence that Gothic Revival architecture and poker both swept America in the same three-year period? Could it?!

Whether you follow our (admittedly dubious) logic or not, this flush-mount makes a strong case for a link between the two. Note the trefoil clovers and diamonds that encircle the outer rim. And the kingly crowns around each socket. Never mind how aces this fixture would look over, say, a round, felted tableā€¦
