Transitional Arts & Crafts Beam Light, c1925 Item # R2494
A minor debate erupted when we acquired this antique beam light. Should we call it Art Nouveau, as the ring of stylized lilies suggests? Or Arts & Crafts, based on the geometric border around the upper canopy? After much backing-and-forthing, we arrived at a compromise: "transitional!" How did we arrive at such decisive, descriptive nomenclature? By reasoning that the two styles overlapped in time (roughly 1890 to 1910), so perhaps lighting manufacturers of later years overlapped in design. One thing we never debated, though, is how delightful this fixture is.
- Historical Style: Transitional
- Note: Mica backing in new.
