While the Sears of today is more known for lawnmowers and power tools, for many decades it was America's general store, a one-stop shop for everything from kit homes to fur coats. And one of the things Sears Roebuck & Co did well in the 1930s and 1940s was reflecting the trends of the day, as evidenced by this stunner from its 1936 Lightmaster Lighting series. As graphic, curvy Art Moderne became increasingly popular, lighting styles became simpler, relying on intriguing shapes more than layer upon layer of decorative detail. This antique features an upward facing cup shade that sits atop an unusual scaffold of ivory-toned metal, something like a lithe and lovely trapeze artist in her swing. Well done, Sears. Well done.
- Historical Style: Art Moderne
- Notes: Finial acts as a switch
