Exceptionally Rare Gas Hoop Pendant C1870s Item # R2563
Popular for basic lighting needs from the 1870s well into the early 1900s, hoop gas fixtures were widely used in functional, utilitarian spaces like stores, shops, and work spaces. However this example is a bit more unique due to the delicate Neo Grec details: note the brass wings at the hips of the hoop, the ornate gas cock, and charming stamped smoke bell. These Classical elements are carried through in the frosted and etched shade, which features swirling acanthus leaves, woodland creatures and pinstriping. Be sure to take a close look at the third and fourth photos to examine the details of this incredible shade.
Today, even though it has transcended over 140 years, we imagine this fixture would be an ideal addition to any home as an entry way pendant or as the focal point in an impressive stairwell.
- Historical Style: Neo Grec
- Notes: Fixture has been repaired in spots and the smoke bell has some defects (see 5th photo)
- Canopy was added as this originally gas fixture would not have had a canopy
- Also would have had a glass chimney inside the shade, although we think it looks just wonderful as is
