Classic Gas/Electric Pendant w/Holophane Shade, c1905 Item # R2611
When electric lighting first came on the scene in the late 1800s, many lighting companies (and homeowners) were reluctant to transition fully to the new technology. Hence, fixtures of the day were designed to split the difference and use both gas and electricity. You can see the evidence in this pendant's upward-facing candles (no longer gas-fueled, of course, but still romantic) and its downward-facing electric socket. You can also see the evidence of how dim the bulbs of the day were, as the prismatic shade was designed to refract and amplify light. It does the same today, in addition to looking simply lovely.
- Historical Style: Period Basics
- Notes: New Turnkey socket.
- Candle Bobeches are thin and slightly misshaped, but we think it just adds character.
