Mid Century Northwest Totem Lamp C1960s Item # R2766
Bright and graphic, this table lamp is exemplary of totem pole art from the Northwest coast and Alaska. The totem features figural carvings of Eagle, Beaver and Raven characters, each of which has been painted with glossy red, blue, yellow and brown. This lamp is topped with a two-tiered speckle-painted resin parchment shade, which washes the surrounding space with great neutral light.
In both the mid 19th and 20th centuries Native American culture and art became a fascination for those that had previously (and continuously) been their oppressors. During the second wave of that trend, the colorful and graphic nature of Native American pattern enjoyed a particular vogue, because those elements played into the style of the 1950's and '60's. This table lamp is a standout of "western" and "native" styles that became hallmarks of that period.
- Historical Style: Mid-Century
