Description

he "Searchlight" Universal Lamp Bracket was manufactured by the McCrosky Reamer Company, Incorporated (a.k.a. McCrosky Tool Corporaton) of Meadville, Penn. as an articulated task light for workbench or machine mounting. With its quirky yet durable construction, 60" operating range, and unusual cast joints prominently embossed with the company name and location, it has become one of the more sought-after models of early-20th-century factory lighting.

This particular example tells a tale of its own rough and tumble life in the workshop. First, it is an assembled out of the parts of an older (1920s) cast-iron McCrosky lamp and a newer (post-WWII) aluminum one, put together by a crafty American machinist, who also apparently thought the lamp's design could be improved by the addition of a heavy base made out of a steel gear. These "improvements" add even more character and authenticity to the piece, as they show that the lamp was well-used and well-loved, and today it serves as a wonderful reminder of our favorite conservation-minded war-era slogan: Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Or do without!

We've included a mirrored Permaflector-style shade, which adds a touch of finesse to the otherwise harsh industrial light.
