Beardslee Denzar Commercial Light w/Mirror Reflectors c1918 Item # R2946
The Denzar line of commercial lighting was produced during the first half of the 20th century by Beardslee Chandelier Manufacturing Company of Chicago, Illinois in response to the massive jump in output that the new Mazda C tungsten bulbs introduced after about 1915.
An early transitional form of what would evolve in a few more years into the classic “schoolhouse fixture,” Denzar fixtures incorporated the semi-indirect dual-shade concept popularized by Brascolite and others, but utilizing a completely enclosed lower shade with a sophisticated half-clear/half-opal vented glass globe that sent soft, diffused light below while directing unobstructed rays into the upper reflector. Many Denzar fixtures featured a glass or metal upper reflector, but this elegant and rare example uses the older corrugated mirrors introduced by I. P. Frink and American Reflector back in the 1870s.
As if all this wasn’t enough, this example also sports an original extended pull-chain socket lever, with the ball-chain pull dropping down through a special hole in the metal shade rim. Early 20th-century industrial commercial lighting doesn’t come with many more bells and whistles than this beautifully restored example.
- Historical Style: Industrial
- Notes: Some mirrored panels have missing silvering, however we think it just adds to the character.
