Copper Ship's Lantern w/ Fresnel Lens C1930s Item # R3278
Looking for a wall light that is authentically nautical and built to last? This heavy-duty little lantern will surely stand up to any weather, whether it adorns the hold of a ship or stands sentinel at your front door. It's base and arm are beautiful copper, and its heavy-duty glass shade is a classic "fresnel lens construction." What's that, you ask? Why, it was French physicist Augustin Fresnel's (1788-1827) answer to the vexing question of how to create a lens large enough for a lighthouse that wouldn't be too heavy to hoist. Fresnel figured correctly that it was the curved surface that gave the lens its focusing power, and that it didn't actually have to be one solid piece. Fresnel-lens lanterns were ubiquitous before flashlights became common, and are a nice way to show that, as the captain of your ship, you have the lighting well in hand.
