Simple yet striking gas/electric combination pendants like this classic example were extremely common in homes around the turn of the century, often in kitchens, bedrooms, hallways, or other less formal rooms. Rarely would both light sources be used at the same time. Rather, one or the other would be turned on depending on the cost and availability of electricity, which was both expensive and somewhat unreliable. This example features a lightly quilted Pearl Opalescent shade, which perfectly set off the carbon-filament bulb that would have been original to the fixture, and for which these shades were intended.
