Mid-Century Gypsy Lounge 3-Light Chandelier C1963 Item # R4104
Rescued from the now-defunct Gypsy Lounge, a Portland, Oregon establishment that fed and watered local rabble-rousers for 67 years, this remarkable 3-light chandelier is as wacky and fun as the restaurant in which it used to hang. Because of its location in a residential neighborhood and the popular fishbowl-sized beverages highlighted on the menu, the Gypsy often attracted the negative attentions of regional politicians. Despite decades of pressure from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, the Gypsy continued to serve patrons in its brightly colored retro-themed bar and lounge until its closure in 2014.
While the Gypsy first opened its doors in 1947, the retro-bohemian theme was probably set when the bar changed locations in 1963. This 3-light fixture, likely installed during the Gypsy’s 1963 update, features a classically mid-century color combination of brown and brass. A highly unusual configuration, the arms of the light swoop down to support inverted conical shades, which are pierced with diamond patterns and topped with triangular serration, like a jaunty crown. Of particular note are the reflective discs, hung above each of the lighted cones. The reflectors are meant to be mounted flush (or nearly flush) to the ceiling and each disc comes with a length of all-thread so that they may be adjusted to the proper height. The canopy sports a partially discernible label, which reads "Dorner & Co. Los Angeles." Sydney C. Dorner was a custom lighting designer for Lightolier in the 1960's. Perhaps these lights can be attributed to him?
A special fixture like this requires a very prominent and large space. We hope it will someday grace the banquet hall of a retro-themed hotel or bowling alley, but would be just as happy if it ended up as the focal point in your checker-boarded man-cave.
- Historical Style: Mid-Century Modern
- Notes: Originally had concentric rings at the base of each arm, which were used to reflect and disperse the light more easily. These rings have been lost to time, leaving a small notch in the bottom rim of each arm
