Arresting Empire Gasolier w/ Dragon Motif c1890 Item # R9200
Where to begin with this remarkable chandelier - the styling or the period lighting technology? First business, then pleasure (although it's all enjoyable to us). By the time this Empire Gasolier (gas-powered Chandelier) hit the market in the late 19th century, electricity was embraced as the light source of the day, if not the future. As a hold-over from the preceding 30 years of illumination, this fixture still boasts tell-tales of its time as a gas light, including the delicate jet cocks on each armback, which were used to turn the gas source off and on. Note that there is also a petite jet valve, which protrudes from the body of the light. This could have served as the main lighter for the gas, but today it is unconnected. We have completely wired this relic so that it glows with modern electricity.
Now for the incredible ornamentation. Distinguished by delicately pierced bodies and finely detailed castings, Empire-style lighting like this 6-light example captivated the market during the 1890s. Difficult and expensive to produce, they are hard to find today and truly bring the ornamental spirit of the Victorian era back to settings old or contemporary. This fixture is further enhanced by an arresting dragon motif, which adds drama and a feeling of levitation to the piece. This chandelier has been fitted with a hard-to-find set of matching, ruffled blue opalescent glass shades. Rare and exceptional.
