Most architects sketch their designs in two-dimensional space first, either on paper or computer, but Martin, who has had two homes featured in the Street of Eames home tour, has a different process. As he says, "I think there is something in my wiring that is different than the pure architect's makeup in that I've really got to build and make things myself." Want to know how that plays out when he's working on high-profile projects like SE's Butler Residence or his 2003 design of the University of Oregon football team's locker room? Well, come ask him.

Corey Martin got his start working in the offices of Richard Potestio and Allied works, and in 1999 he started his own furniture, sculpture, and design firm. In 2005 he joined efforts with local developer and architect Ben Kaiser to form PATH Architecture. An award-winning, multi-discipline firm, PATH Architecture excels in urban high-density developments, adaptive re-use for existing structures, and environmentally considered, site-specific residential architecture. Martin's architectural designs are rooted in his deep understanding of the Pacific Northwest landscape and his appreciation for the natural world.

The Experts:

Michael Stueve, partner at SRM Architecture, has been at the forefront of Portland's architecture and interior design scene for over 20 years. Known for bringing a contemporary twist to traditional luxury housing, Michael has twice been awarded the Seattle Design Center's award for outstanding residential interiors in the Pacific Northwest. Michael will discuss bringing Mid-Century modern furnishings into layered interiors and bridging disparate styles.

Jennifer Leonard, a second-generation interior designer, founded the Portland, Oregon-based firm, Nifelle Design, in 2005. Featured by the Oregonian Homes & Gardens, Sunset, and Angie's List (perennial winner of the Super Service Award), Jennifer's work is recognized for its classic and timeless elegance and livable practicality. From Jennifer's home studio and showroom on Mt. Tabor, Nifelle Design's influence has spread throughout the western United States. From color consultations to custom furnishings, wall coverings to window treatments, Jennifer applies her experienced perspective, along with practical guidance, to inspire and enhance her clients' vision for their home or workplace. A Conversation With Jeff Kovel

Jeff Kovel arrived in Portland, Oregon in 1996, drawn by a deep affection for the West. He founded Skylab Architecture three years later as a laboratory to explore a departure from an industry of mounting standardization. His work blurs the distinction between architecture and design, between the natural and synthetic, and between the past and the future. He holds an architecture degree from Cornell University.

Skylab Architecture works on residential and commercial projects. Departure, the firm's newest restaurant and lounge, is designed to be an urban escape. Skylab also designed the renowned Doug Fir Lounge and East Chinatown Lounge. The firm's other projects include award-winning LEED gold retail, a commercial office design that turns the cubicle into modules of practice, and a private residence bordering a 5000-acre wooded urban park that cantilevers to erase boundaries between inside and outside.
