GE didn't invent tungsten technology, but they did patent its manufacturing technique in 1906. By 1911, tungsten lightbulbs were a commercially viable product which the public - happy to have a brighter, better quality of light - snapped up.

With brighter bulbs came larger shades. Generally categorized as "schoolhouse", shades with rounded, wide-set profiles like the # Rounded 14" Opal Schoolhouse Shade were installed in businesses and homes for much of the 20th century.
