This shade and its 16-1/2" cousin each go through the same glass "frosting" process. (If you enjoy throwing around lighting nomenclature at cocktail parties, read on, and you'll surely stun them with your knowledge of "exterior satin etching".)

Frosted shades get frosty after the glass has been dipped in an acid or been carefully sandblasted. Most of our shades, like the Decorative Frosted Teardrop Shade, are etched on the inside.

Why the etch the outside of these shades, then? Well, a greater surface area with no detail is trickier to work with. Etching the outside ensures a uniform satin appearance.
