The end of the first World War brought about a shift in American popular culture towards a romanticized view of our Old World ancestors.

The reality of this dream was in the lighting and architectural styles which swept across the country's urban and suburban landscapes. Hollywood played along, too: Its romantic preoccupations influenced domestic design up the point of WWII.
