This fixture's bell-shaped shade holders succeeded an older, exposed-bulb design: sockets edged with decorative, flared "skirts".

Patterned and painted skirts hid the sockets, and dressed up otherwise plain bulbs. You can occasionally find these fixtures in Antique Lighting.
