Natural Ingredients
Era: 1900 - 1925
Related Styles: Arts & Crafts, Mission, Transitional Mission, Old English/ Tudor
First introduced by Gustav Stickley, the Craftsman style evolved to become perhaps the first truly authentic American design vocabulary.
While Stickley's magazine The Craftsman originally took its inspiration from ideals espoused by the English Arts & Crafts movement, his emphasis on natural materials, honest construction, and the hand of the maker helped create a more earthy, democratic, and accessible Americanized style.
Credit is due to Stickley for being among the earliest to make "simple" designs respectable in ways that were fresh and unique.
Craftsman style lights are typically more sturdy and rugged than Arts & Crafts, and less square-based in design than Mission.
