Similar, But Different

Era: 1890 - 1920

Related Styles: Colonial Revival, Late Victorian, Classical Revival

From McKim, Mead, and White's Shingle Style homes of the 1880s through the Colonial Ranch houses of the 1950s, the colonial "revival" has been going on continuously for well over 100 years.

However, each generation's take on the period of our nation's founding has a slightly different flavor - which is why we don't lump every Colonial-inspired fixture into the Colonial Revival style.

Around 1900, when interest was still relatively new, Colonial Style was often more artful, interpretive, and substantial than what followed later - thus our distinction between the Colonial style, and the Colonial Revival designs of the '20s and '30s.
