Carbon-filament light bulbs debuted in the 1890s and eked their way into households until 1912, when the tungsten filament transformed the industry.

Brighter and more powerful Tungsten-filament bulbs spurred a wave of new bowl-shade fixtures like the Ladd's Addition and Abernethy.

Painted Bulbs, introduced in the 1920s, added a decorative touch to tungsten bulbs for the exposed bulb fixtures popular at that time.

Tip: Carbon-filament bulbs offer the unique combination of 1/3 the light at 10 times the price of standard bulbs, but they make any fixture ethereally beautiful. The photo above, our Burnside fixture, gives a good sense of the glow.
