Aluminum Crouse-Hinds "Explosion Proof" Hazard Phone C1960 Item # F5408

Was $900

$674.99

This phone comes from the Crouse-Hinds Electric Company of Syracuse, New York. Founded in 1894 and still operating today, Crouse-Hinds is a manufacturer of "high-grade electric specialties," and was responsible for installing Syracuse's first-ever traffic signal in 1924. This phone came later for much less pedestrian purposes: it was designed for use in "harsh and hazardous areas," such as chemical plants and refineries, and is of a type called "explosion proof." It would be nifty if that meant "built to survive an explosion," but instead it means that the electrical circuits in the phone itself won't spark an explosion.

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition, with a few scratches in the aluminum – all commensurate with age.
