Enormous Painting of Abandoned Château in Avignon by E. de Martenne Item # F8414
By Etienne de Martenne (1868-1920), this enormous and wonderfully atmospheric painting depicts a dilapidated stone château, surrounded by gnarled trees in a deep wood.
Martenne was an accomplished artist who exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1901 until 1920, and was clearly influenced by other artists of the French Impressionist movement (Toulouse-Lautrec and Manet come to mind). We were told the house in the painting was in Avignon, France. A beautifully painted piece of this size and scale requires a place of prominence – a stunning visual focal point for any space.
Historical Style: Modern
Condition Notes: Signed E. de Martenne. Unfinished borders some some of the dark canvas below. Newly framed in a solid wood moulding with burl veneer. Acid-free mat and backing.
