Red Mesa Navajo Pound Rug in w/ Yellow Highlights Item # F8455

Circa 1900 | 46" x 57"

This early 20th century Navajo rug features the Red Mesa motif, bordered with jagged zigzag patterns. Red Mesa was a trading post in Arizona, and the rugs from this outfit were known for their precision and intricacy. This is a 'pound' rug, dating from a period when some rugs actually sold by the pound! In this period, the weavers were tailoring their work more toward Anglo tastes - rugs rather than blankets, particular simplified motifs, and since Anglos equated a thicker weaving with quality, a heavier and thicker weave. This had the added benefit to the weaver of weighing more, and therefore fetching more money when sold by the pound.

This masterful weaving features distinctive diagonal 'terminal' lines, and the handspun character of the yarns is especially evident in the lovely variegation of the naturally dyed gray and black.

* 46" x 57"
* Historical Style: Traditional
* Condition Notes: Minimal wear in the wool or weaving. Some pulls along the edges, all commensurate with age.
