PAIR OF MOTTLED OR OXIDIZED COPPER PUSH PLATES, C1910 Item # G1172
On this pair of wide-bevel, plated-steel push plates we find an interesting example of the warmth and drama of a finish that was common between 1900 and 1920, yet remains poorly understood today - mottled or oxidized copper. Consisting of bold patterns of relieved copper highlight on a darkly antiqued background, the finish was especially popular on less expensive materials like cast iron and steel to enrich and romanticize their look. It was used on lighting, hardware, and even furniture to convey a rugged and exotic character that was unique to the time period.
