3-Light Streamline Moderne Slipper Shade Chandelier, C1935 Item # R2360
Slipper-shaded lights like this antique chandelier were the hot trend from about 1930 through 1935, before Streamline style and cup-shade fixtures moved center stage. Inspired by French examples and featuring glass slipper shades at each light bulb – typically unique to specific body designs – these fixtures have a fanciful, romantic appeal. The orientation of the slipper shades illuminates the ceiling above while casting a warm and intimate light on the area below – in this case, a warm, amber glow. Delicate metalwork and a faux hammered texture imbue this singular treasure with still more character.
This small chandelier is a great example of the transition from the immensely popular Art Deco-style slipper-shade fixtures of the early 1930s to the cleaner Streamline Moderne style that emerged around the middle of the decade. Giving up ornamental decorative effects for aerodynamic lines and an uncluttered profile, this look was widely embraced up through WWII. This fixture is only 14" in diameter, making it suitable not only for small dining rooms and entryways, but also for a stylish bedroom.
- Historical Style: Streamline
- Notes: Finial acts as a switch
