Nickel-Plated Operay Multibeam Surgical Light Item # R2799
Designed and distributed by the Operay Laboratories of Madison, WI, the Operay Multibeam surgical light was a fixture in many operating rooms in the early 20th century, this one in particular hails from a veterinary surgery in Portland, Oregon. With a series of lights, magnifying lenses, mirrors a counterbalance, and even a mechanical manual adjustment knob to fine-tune the angle of the light, this elaborately engineered fixture was used to shed maximum focused light on a very sensitive subject.
While all surgical lights are special finds, the Operay Multibeam is the queen of them all, while this model is the queen of queens, and extremely rare. This is the earliest model made, being elevated by a few key elements absent in other and later models, including superbly preserved nickel plating and the original Holophane prismatic globe, which provides ambient light to the surrounding room.
- Historical Style: Industrial
- Condition Notes: Some wear on the original finish, particularly along the handle and counterbalance. The cast iron mounting base is a new addition, but has been finished to compliment the fixture.
- Bulbs not included.
