Large and Lovely 4-Light Shower w/ Verre de Soie shades Item # R8366

Circa 1920

$1,500.00

The 1920s saw the convergence of two popular trends – Revival styles and the stamped pan light. Combined in countless ways, Colonial pan lights were ubiquitous in all types of houses – from bungalows to foursquares to Dutch Colonials – yet they always felt right at home with their clean lines, restrained detailing, and casually formal character.

Pans like this example were "bread-and-butter" fixtures that could be elevated with the addition of unique ornamentation or special shades. The Colonial Revival borrowed heavily from various Revival styles, like the lovely Art Nouveau stamped pattern on of pan of this fixture. The whole composition is brought to breathtaking heights by a set of four etched iridescent ruffled shades, almost certainly made by Steuben, though we can't see their mark. This extraordinarily beautiful type of glass Steuben called Verre de Soie, meaning 'glass of silk'. This light might have hung in an entry, a stairway, a breakfast nook, or a bedroom.

  • Historical Style: Art Nouveau
  • Note: flea bite chips are present on some of the fitters of these shades, although they are hidden when installed.
